Midfield High School

Rubbing two sticks together to make a campfire, the frustrated Midfield Swami reaches for a Bic Lighter to cure the problem, just as his cell phone rings. It's his parole officer.......

Do you think modern technology reduces or increases stress? Why?

Before I retired, I worked on 2 computers at the same time while monitoring incoming customer calls - 2 Desktop computers arranged side by side... mouse in both hands...headset connected to the phone. I was a Quality Assurance Agent for a major credit card company. Talk about a stress filled job - you ain't lived til you've had Rocky (SS) call to gripe about his credit card.

I agree with Lisa - since we lived across the street from each other as kids. We were always outside - there were no video games, remote controls, microwaves...You watched educational television, got up off your lazy butt to change the channels, and if you got hungry, you cooked something on the stove! Oh, and the telephone cord would only stretch sooo far - no cordless.

So, in my humble opinion - there are both positive and negative affects of modern technology - I don't even want to talk about the number of remote controls Tim has to operate the television - entertainment center...all I know is he better leave written instructions if he plans on going anywhere!

Technology, as great as it is and as much as I love it, has made most everyone very lazy. That's the sad part. My husband and I talked about what we used to do as children and most of it consisted of being outside. When I got grounded, I couldn't play outside. I have actually "punished" my children before by making them go outside and walk around the block! Now I write it on the board as a part of their "to do" list.

it can be like a wife , it can kill you, or it can make you want to kill !
you have to balance it all out, thats why i have to do all this stuff for a living, but i dont let it be my life.
it streeses me from 6 am to 6 pm 5 days a week. but out at the lake where i live , i DONT have a land line phone,
DONT have a home computer , DONT have a laptop , only have ONE TV and it is NOT in the bedroom,
to balance things in life , you need your home to be a sanctuary for peace and calm.
so when i am on my deck, or pontoon, i dont worry about ringing, and beeping ,and buzzing, if its that important
that you just have to interupt my time off, then come find my ass .

I do agree with that. But increases stress ? Yes to a point. We want the latest, fastest, highest resolution, device we can get regardless of price or durability. This goes for 8 year olds too !! We never had DVD players in the car. We rode around looking out the window, drawing, playing car games, talking. Hey, I like my DVD player, me & my son(23) have a xbox 360. Now kids text constantly, instead of having actual human conversation and developing communication skills or MANNERS,,,

cell phone- you get a call that makes you smile then you drop your phone in a puddle
computer- a screen pops up saying you just won an item you really want then it gives your computer a virus
gps- you finally find a shortcut to a friend you havent seen in years but it gives you a street that doesnt exist
pda-helps you remember an important meeting you forgot daylight savings time
